We Stitch Online

Our Story

So much has moved online this past year - stretching our ideas of what's possible.  For years brilliant stitchers and crafters have shown us how to do almost anything with amazing video lessons - but if we wanted to meet up with fellow stitchers we mostly arranged to get together in person.  For generations, front rooms and village halls have hosted groups of knitters, stitchers, weavers and spinners.  Skills and knowledge would be shared along with a cup of tea and a chat.

Covid restrictions have highlighted the loss of those opportunities we took so completely for granted.  Watching a video is fine, but can be lonely.  Stitching on your own in your front room is great, but not the same as sharing time with others.

What could we do instead?  Would it be possible to create a space to come together to meet new friends and share a laugh while we learned and stitched together?

The answer was "YES!"  We've brought together stitchers from across the South West & Wales - many who haven't picked up a needle for MANY years!!

Over the winter we've met online once a week.  Fabric, thread, wool, needles and booklets of information were sent out, and friendly chat, advice and support helped us to knit, sew & create!  People have valued the chance to get together and have been delighted with their achievements!

We're currently finishing off our last project and I'm now busy preparing for our last get together before we stop for the summer.   Our Spring Stitching Fest will run for five weeks starting on 18th May.  Three of our six sessions will be online, and three face to face!!! (We have all fingers crossed that Covid regulations will allow - but it's looking hopeful!!!).

We do hope you'll join us - you will be very welcome!  Click here to go to the Blog for more information.

A Stitching Story

I was lucky enough to learn about knitting and sewing from my very talented mother.

I can't remember ever not knowing about needles, threads, pins, cloth & patterns.  What a gift she gave me!

This is my attempt to pass this gift on to you - I think she would be pleased.

Pretty much all my working life has been focussed on learning;  how do we learn, and how can we help others to learn.  What works best, and what doesn't.  We Stitch Online is giving me an opportunity to bring together my love of stitching with a love of learning.  I do hope you'll join me.

Our next groups will begin online in March 2021.  Just email me on admin@fifty.me.uk if you'd like to join us.

We won't quite be able to have tea and cake together while we stitch - but we'll do what we can to create a welcoming and gentle space while we get to grips with our needles and thread!   See you there!
